Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: charging for Christian coaching.

Almost every Holy Spirit-led coach I train hits a wall at the same place. Fees. A quiet guilt creeps in. Then the question follows: “If God called me to help people, shouldn’t I do this for free?”

Of course, that is where many aspiring Christian coaches get stuck. Some worry that money dilutes the ministry. Others fear it turns away the people who need help most. Besides, nobody wants to look greedy.

If you have felt that tension, let’s clear the air. Scripture is not vague here. In fact, getting paid for your labor is not unbiblical. It is necessary. Here are the truths every Christian coach needs to stand on.

Is charging for Christian coaching unbiblical?

First, notice the difference between salvation and instruction. Salvation is the free gift of God. Coaching, however, is dedicated personal instruction. It helps someone transform how they actually live. Because of that difference, God established systems to care for the workers.

Consider the Apostle Paul. He made tents at times so that new believers carried no burden. Even so, he defended the right of teachers to earn a living. In other words, Paul set that right aside in certain seasons. He never denied it existed.

Are you charging for the Holy Spirit or for your time?

Let’s be crystal clear. God’s grace, wisdom, and spiritual gifts are free and priceless. Therefore, you are not selling God. What a client pays for is the practical structure that holds the work together:

• ✦ Your professional time and undivided attention
• ✦ The years you spent learning, training, and getting certified
• ✦ The lesson plans, worksheets, and frameworks you built
• ✦ The energy it takes to keep a client moving forward

Think about a Christian counselor, author, or consultant. Nobody accuses them of selling God. Instead, everyone understands that a fee covers time and seasoned wisdom. In the same way, coaching is no different.

Do paying clients actually get better results?

Ask any experienced coach and you will hear the same answer. In general, free clients rarely finish. Because the coaching costs nothing, sessions get canceled and assignments get skipped. The breakthrough gets pushed to another day. Consequently, there is no stake in the game.

Payment changes the posture, however. Clients arrive on time. Assignments get done. The hard, unglamorous work finally happens. As a result, a fee is not an obstacle to growth. Very often that commitment is the push she needs.

How does charging a fair fee protect your ministry from burnout?

God never asks you to run yourself into the ground. Neglecting your family is not the price of obedience. Draining your bank account is not either. Above all, a fair price creates room to serve with excellence, while your own bills stay paid.

So your calling and your compensation are not enemies. A fair price is not a distraction from your ministry. Instead, it is what allows your ministry to last.
